Come
with us to gather nearly 70 horses from spring pasture and settle them
on their summer range on the Rocky Mountain Front, bordering the Bob Marshall
Wilderness. This spectacular mountain region is about an hours
drive south of Glacier National Park, in historic “cowboy country”.
The horses are owned by Sun Canyon Ranch of Augusta, MT. You can
read about a previous horse roundup adventure in our newsletter.
Tentative
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Great Falls, MT. We'll take you to camp where you'll meet your partners in adventure, enjoy a ranch-style supper, and settle into comfortable tent accommodations. Day 2: After a hearty breakfast, meet your horse and review safety practices. Learn the basics of riding in rough country from Monte. Then head out with your wrangler for an orientation ride, and see how many horses you can locate! Lunch will be provided in the field. After supper, you'll have time to fish, begin roping lessons, or kick back and enjoy a campfire gathering.
Day 4: After the horses are settled in the mountain pasture, we'll take an evening ride to a nearby “mountain spa” for a warm soak and relaxation. Return ride to Sun Canyon will be “under the stars”. Day 5: Time for a different kind of horse fun! Today we'll head out after breakfast to enjoy the high country scenery and wildlife. After returning to the ranch, we'll get a chance to learn what “behind-the-scenes” work goes into producing a quality hometown rodeo. The end of the day will feature western dancing at Sun Canyon. Day 6: We'll return the saddle horses to their home pasture, and return in the evening to Great Falls so you can return home or continue your vacation from there.
